
Oriental Rug Care: 25 Need to know Tips

- Rotate 180degs, on a regular basis to spread the wear and limit sun bleaching.
- Vacuum regularly – both sides
- Avoid a “motorised brush” vacuum near the fringes/corners/edges
- Do not walk on the precious rug whilst wearing outdoor shoes
- Remove steel staples, these can hurt your toes and cause rust marks
- Fragile rugs may benefit from underlay (acting as a shock absorber)
- Heavy furniture? – use castor cups or off-cuts of carpet, to cushion impacts
- Inspect for moths and moth damage, especially under the edges
- Detangle fringes (see photo)
- Blot spots & spills, do not rub them
- Find your local NCCA cleaner and have your precious rug professionally cleaned
- If wool, do not clean with anything other than a “woolsafe” product
- If Coir, sisal seagrass or viscose, avoid water and all fluids
- Anti-rug creep may help to stop the rug creep across the carpet
- Rugs can be a trip hazard but please avoid double sided tape
- Do not cut off labels – keep them for authenticity.
- Do not cut off fringes
- Do not pull knots or loose fibres
- If your rug has some damage – remember a “stitch in time saves nine”

If you are Storing your rug: –
- Vacuum it before you store it
- Place some “moth” protection products inside the rolled rug
- Store dry, wrap if possible and inspect regularly for damage and insects
- Do not roll it too tightly and avoid folding or creasing it
- Do not store additional heavy objects on top of it
Do not store near moth eaten fabrics or in damp conditions
